Jhapa | HUSADEC Nepal and RRN, with the support of Start Ready and Start Network, have been implementing monsoon preparedness and disaster risk reduction programs in areas of Jhapa district that are vulnerable to flooding from the Kankai River.
Under this initiative, Vulnerability and Capacity Assessments (VCA) have been conducted at ward and community levels in coordination with local disaster management committees. In addition, special attention has been given to situational analysis, disaster risk mapping, and the assessment of various indicators to identify potential risks and develop preparedness plans.
Moving beyond the traditional practice of focusing only on response and recovery after disasters, this program prioritizes pre-disaster risk analysis, preparedness planning, and the development of municipal-level contingency plans before disasters occur. According to the organizers, this policy-based approach is being introduced as a first-of-its-kind initiative in Jhapa district.
Under the same campaign, orientation training on Protection from Sexual Harassment, Exploitation and Abuse (PSHEA) was successfully conducted in Gaurigunj Rural Municipality, Kankai Municipality, Jhapa Rural Municipality, and Shivasatakshi Municipality.
The program is expected to further strengthen the capacity, awareness, and preparedness of local communities, stakeholders, and municipal structures in effectively managing disaster risks before the monsoon season.
